5 day programme
Cuyabeno
Wildlife Reserve is situated in the north-east of Ecuador, between the
San Miguel and Aguarico Rivers, close to the Colombian and Peruvian borders.
The reserve is made up of 605, 000 hectares of primary forest, rivers
and lagoons, where there are a huge variety of animals and plants.
Five different ethnic groups live within the reserve: the Siona, Secoya,
Cofán, Quichua and Shuar, each with their own culture and language.
This
journey is for those who have a passion for the environment and adventure.
You will discover this wild and fascinating world in the most natural and
rewarding way, by canoe and on foot. Only on the last day do we return
by motorized dugout canoe. We should be able to see parrots, toucans,
monkeys, fteshwater dolphins, anacondas and caimans.
Day
1
Leaving
Lago Agrio at 8.30 am, we transfer to the Cuyabeno River bridge (the entrance
to the park) by private transport (3 hours). From the bridge we paddle
by
canoe
down the Cuyabeno River, to "The Tiger Pass" campsite (3.5-5 hours). On
our journey we see a wide range of flora and fauna of the primary forest.
At the end of the day we camp out in tents.
Day
2
In
the morning we do a hike, where we can have a go at swinging through the
forest on the hanging vines. We then continue to paddle downstream
to the next camp located on Laguna Grande (3.5 - 5 hours), with time to
take a refreshing dip in the lake. In the afternoon we go piranha
fishing in one of the outlets and watch the sunset, over this magnificent
lake. We sleep in typical cabins.
Day
3
In
the morning we undertake a longer walk on the "Saladero" path (5 hours).
Our
guide
will explain the uses and applications of plants, those of which are medicinal,
edible, poisonous, hallucinogenic and those that are used to build houses,
canoes, hammocks, and baskets. After dark we go for a night trip
to look for caimans.
Day

In
the morning we leave, by canoe, paddling to different small lagoons (Caimancocha,
Patococha) and streams of the Cuyabeno lake system (5 hours). We return
to camp for a rest, before doing a jungle hike in search of different birds
and monkeys during the afternoon. Our guide will explain this enormous
ecosystem and how symbiosis exists between the plants and animals. Later
on we canoe out to the flooded forest and watch the sunset. Finally,
we do a night hike, looking for those nocturnal creatures.
Day
5
After
breakfast we head out in the canoes, paddling along the Cuyabeno River
to spot birds. We return to the camp by motorized dugout canoe so
that we have time to freshen up before taking the launch back to the Cuyabeno
River bridge, where the private transport will be waiting to return to
Lago Agrio. We arrive at about 5.30 pm.
LAGARTO COCHA - AGUARICO RIVER
8 Day Programme
This
trip along the Aguarico River takes us into one of the remote areas,
not only of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, but of the entire Ecuadorian
jungle. The Lagarto Cocha River and its lagoons are but a short distance
from the Peruvian border. This unpopulated region is rarely visited and
boasts a fabulous wealth of plants and animals.
Due to huge distances we need to
cover, most of this trip is by motorized dugout canoe. We do, however,
take the paddle canoes to use on the small rivers and the Lagarto Cocha
lake system. You will be able to experience certain aspects of indigenous
culture such as the Cofán of Sábalo. We should be able
to see animals such as parrots, toucans, monkeys, tapirs, piranhas, freshwater
dolphins, anacondas and caimans.
Day

We
leave Lago Agrio at 7.00 am,by privat transport to Chiritza on the Aguarico
River. We travel downsream in the motorized dugout canoe to reach the Cuyabeno
River (7 hours). We stay in a traditional cabin overnight.
